I wonder how photographers and publications staff would feel about a mobile image lab. MIS staff needs to become more familiar with the qualitative issues regarding imaging works of art. I am a long time advocate of, where the resources can be mustered, keeping the image making and quality control in-house. We live with the objects and know what they look like. Often a scan needs to be corrected because: a) it matches the film but the film can be improved b) it doesn't match the film I am aware that small institutions may not be able to devote the same technical oversight. If they are empoying photographers, however, photographers will become imagers. And lets not forget that we are all starting to look at direct digital capture for some applications.
