Please let us know your thoughts by December 1, 1997. thanks! jennifer and David -------- AMICO Public Catalog Specification DRAFT for the consideration of the Technical Operations Committee This version dated 18 November 1997 This document outlines the requirements for a publically accessible catalogue of the AMICO Library 1. Purpose and Goals The AMICO public catalogue will be made freely available, on the Word Wide Web and in on-line public access catalogs, in order to increase awareness of the availability of the content of the AMICO Library. Links must be provided from the Public Catalog to individual AMICO members for commercial licensing, and to AMICO distributors for licensing educational use. 2. Content of the Catalog The AMICO public catalog will contain a subset of the information provided in the AMICO Library, limited to a brief structured text record and a ăthumbnailä image. A. Textual Data A limited subset of the full textual data documenting a work in the AMICO Library may be made available freely. Only the following fields from the structured text records are permitted to be displayed. Field definitions are available in the AMICO Data Dictionary. Creator Name Creator Birth Date ? Views must retain the original aspect ratio of the original and their dimensions may not exceed 128 bits x128 bits in resolution with a bit-depth of 8 bits. It is desirable that images appear as Îin-lineâ images in a .GIF format. C. Multimedia or other files No associated multimedia, text or detailed image files may be made available as part of the AMICO Public Catalog 3. Access to the Library As access is the primary rationale for creating a public catalog, the following access requirements must be present in all implementations. A. Access Points Searches by creator, date, repository name and location of repository are required. Searches of other fields are permitted. B. Metadata Each publicly available Web page must be accompanied by Dublin Core metadata, to enable the page to be accurately indexed. A 0specification for metadata will be provided. 4. Rights A copyright statement must accompany every image. In addition, a hotlink must be provided to "Rights". Double clicking an image or the required "Rights" label will return a message which advises users that: a) access to the materials for non-commercial, educational use are available from AMICO with a hotlink to AMICO b) licensed users may continue their examination of additional materials provided by a distributor, with hotlinks to the distributors, and c) commercial rights are available from the rights holder/ contributor with a hotlink to the contributor AMICO will provide URLs for these hot links. 5. Product Identity Public Web sites must clearly identify the content of the AMICO Library by its source and maintain the identity of that source for users at all times. 6. Multiple Browsers All AMICO Public Web sites must support multiple browsers as defined in the current specification. 7. Functioning Links All links on AMICO Public Web sites must function correctly. Broken links must be corrected within 48 hours of notification. No links may be reported as "Under Construction". |
