AMICO Public Catalog
Specification

DRAFT for the consideration of the Technical Operations
Committee

This version dated 18 November 1997

This document outlines the requirements for a publically
accessible catalogue of the AMICO Library

1. Purpose and Goals
The AMICO public catalogue will be made freely available, on
the Word Wide Web and in on-line public access catalogs, in
order to increase awareness of the availability of the
content of the AMICO Library. Links must be provided from the
Public Catalog to individual AMICO members for commercial
licensing, and to AMICO distributors for licensing educational
 use.

2. Content of the Catalog
The AMICO public catalog will contain a subset of the
information provided in the AMICO Library, limited to a brief
structured text record and a ăthumbnailä image.

A. Textual Data
A limited subset of the full textual data documenting a work
in the AMICO Library may be made available freely. Only the
following fields from the structured text records are
permitted to be displayed. Field definitions are available in
the AMICO Data Dictionary.

B. ăThumbnailä Images
Only one view of a work is permitted. Views must retain the
original aspect ratio of the original and their dimensions may
not exceed 128 bits x128 bits in resolution with a bit-depth
of 8 bits. It is desirable that images appear as Îin-lineâ
images in a .GIF format.

C. Multimedia or other files
No associated multimedia, text or detailed image files may be
made available as part of the AMICO Public Catalog

3. Access to the Library
As access is the primary rationale for creating a public
catalog, the following access requirements must be present in
all implementations.

	A. Access Points
Searches by creator, date, repository name and location of
repository are required. Searches of other fields are
permitted.

B. Metadata
Each publicly available Web page must be accompanied by Dublin
Core metadata, to enable the page to be accurately indexed. A
0specification for metadata will be provided.

4. Rights
A copyright statement must accompany every image. In addition,
a hotlink must be provided to "Rights". Double clicking an
image or the required "Rights" label will return a message
which advises users that:

a) access to the materials for non-commercial, educational use
are available from AMICO with a hotlink to AMICO

b) licensed users may continue their examination of additional
materials provided by a distributor, with hotlinks to the
distributors, and

c) commercial rights are available from the rights holder/
contributor with a hotlink to the contributor

AMICO will provide URLs for these hot links.

5.	Product Identity
Public Web sites must clearly identify the content of the
AMICO Library by its source and maintain the identity of that
source for users at all times.

6.	Multiple Browsers
All AMICO Public Web sites must support multiple browsers as
defined in the current specification.

7.	Functioning Links
All links on AMICO Public Web sites must function correctly.
Broken links must be corrected within 48 hours of
notification. No links may be reported as "Under
Construction".
