In response to Margaret Gray's question regarding what to do about supplying variant artist names I see three possible solutions. 1) Make CRN repeating and allow Contributing members to submit more than one sort name. 2) Make CRN repeating but have Contributing members supply only one sort name, and then have RLG populate name variants per ULAN look up 3) Have only one sort name sent to AMICO Library DB but have the front end query system search ULAN for variants before launching search. I like number 2 since clean up of creator names and dates vis-a-vis ULAN should be done by RLG anyway. Along the same lines I would suggest we make CRC repeating as well. Often more than one place/nationality can be associated with an artist. (Creator-date -place and creator-death place could be folded into this field with a qualifier field necessary to distinguish one from the others.) Finally, I'd like to raise once again the issue of where culture belongs. Ricky, Jennifer and I had some discussions on this last year and I'm still in favor of culture as an agent, going in CRN field, not in CRC. Gregory Tschann |
