AMICO is employing licensing as a way to make available resources which would not otherwise be available (such as materials whose copyrights are held by artists and their estates), to allow uses that would not be allowed otherwise (in the U.S. under Fair Use or in Canada under "Fair Dealing", or elsewhere under similar exemptions and defenses. The AMICO Licenses explicitly permit multiple copies, systematic copying, public display and most other educational uses and AMICO is designed to support ease of access without individual copyright negotiations. Nothing in the AMICO licenses is in any way designed to limit Fair Use where it pertains. AMICO will offer different licenses, citing different users and different uses, to universities, to museums, to K-12 educational institutions and to public libraries in order to explicitly cover the needs of those communities. The Testbed year is in part designed to learn more about such desired uses and to enable discussion of them. Jennifer and David |
