I'm sorry that I'm just getting around to reading the proposal on usage data that will be recorded by RLG. Before discussing it with my colleagues here at Carnegie Mellon, and then commenting upon the proposal, I am hoping for a few quick clarifications: Timespan? Jennifer's email announcing the RLG proposal says that "RLG will issue retrospective reports for the Fall term, early in the new year." Does this mean starting with the date the database went public? Frequency? The proposal says reports will be published monthly. Will a monthly breakdown also be available in the retrospective report for Fall term? Distribution? Is my reading of the proposal correct in that the only report that would be shared with Testbed universities is the one listing downloads and ftp's? Users? I assume that the museums contributing images to the AMICO Library are also frequent users of the Library via Eureka. True? If so, it is possible that their methods of using the service could differ substantially from students and faculty at the testbed sites. It might be, for example, that those building the database search more frequently by the "owner" index, or that they do less "keyword" searching, etc. Will the logs help to distinguish these major types of users? (It occurs to me that separate logs for the "Enterprise" and "Zepher" servers may be a means of doing this, but that is not clear.)
