Application Guidelines for the Creation of
Dublin Core Metadata Records for AMICO Library Media Files

DRAFT
1998/01/20

Comments to jtrant@archimuse.com

Purpose

In addition to contributing structured text records that document works of art, members of AMICO will be adding images, extended unstructured or marked-up texts, multimedia, sound and other associated documentation in the form of BLOBS [binary large objects] to The AMICO Library conforming to registered MIME types. A metadata record will accompany each one of these files.

Premises

  • A Dublin Core metadata set (consisting of as many as fifteen or as few as two repeatable elements), will be made for each document, image, sound file or other BLOB and for the each of sources from which they were derived. Some AMICO data elements have been created as extensions to currently agreed Dublin Core metadata elements and are tagged as AMICO elements rather than DC elements.
  • The Relationship-Type and Relationship-Indicator elements are used to document the 1:1 relationship between objects, e.g. between each version of a digital image file, or between the work of art, and its associated documentation.

NOTE: A separate mapping has been made between the Dublin Core and the full AMICO data specification for describing works of art that are depicted or documented in the BLOBs described in this manner.

Dublin Core Definitions, given in italics, are drawn from the "Dublin Core Metadata Element Set: Reference Description", Last modified 1997-11-02, and available at http://purl.oclc.org/metadata/dublin_core_elements
